A Sustainable Village Project |
The village primary school is the centre for village development. Teams of professionals in each of the three fields visit the schools during the year.
The immediate task is to provide improved access to quality education, community health and improved agricultural practices.
Once sustainable models have been established, the focus will move to another school in another village. |

Minimising Birth Complications |
The work with Birthing Kits continues to be a major part of our work each time we visit. We have now delivered 2,000 kits thanks to our suppliers, Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia). Dr David Roberts conducted training sessions with the Mother’s Union on how to safely and cleanly deliver a baby in the village.

Relationships in the Community |
It is difficult to work in isolation in a place like PNG. The impact of strong relationships becomes a crucial factor. We met with the CEO of Popondetta General Hospital, Dr Gunzee Gavin. For some time we have had ongoing discussions with the hospital about the need to urgently replace the operating theatres. We have arranged for new plans to be drawn up for the hospital and have commenced talks with a firm in New Zealand that constructs pre-fabricated operating theatres.

First Aid kits for School Children |
Both schools at Gona and Hohorita now have a strong, sturdy First Aid kit which is designed for tropical conditions. Dr Robyn White, one of OCDP’s medical advisors, accepted responsibility for sourcing suitable kits, making sure that the contents were of a sufficiently high standard for use in the schools.

Monitoring the Health of the Children |
Health was the major focus for the April trip to PNG. Dr David Roberts, supported by the team, carried out a detailed medical examination, including taking blood samples, of the school children at Hohorita and Gona. The teachers were also examined as were some of the adults from the village. David is a consulting paediatrician in Perth and is one of OCDP’s advisors.

The Challenge of Curriculum Development |
The implementation of the outcomes based curriculum continues to be an issue for teachers in PNG schools including St James’ Primary School, Hohorita and Holy Cross Primary School, Gona.
