Civil Unrest at UPNG

Newsletter No 19

It was surprising to receive reports that PNG police had fired on students at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) in Port Moresby.

There has been unrest on the campus for a number of weeks. Students have boycotted lectures and caused other disruption. The culmination of these events was the shooting of students on Wednesday 8 June, 2016. Differing reports on what caused this has been reported in the media. Breakouts of violence and looting also occurred on the streets in suburbs around Port Moresby.

Since Independence in 1975, issues in PNG have generally been peacefully resolved.
