Tawaii Gawin is the Unit Manager of the Accident and Emergency Department at Popondetta General Hospital. Born in Waira Vanua Village in Central Province, Tawaii attended Kupiano High School before receiving her Certificate in Nursing at the Lae School of Nursing and becoming a registered nurse. Tawaii first worked at a private clinic in Lae and then later at Rural Health in Morobe Province. In 1997, she moved to Port Moresby General Hospital where she met resident doctor and her future husband, Gunzee. In 2012, she undertook a Bachelor of Emergency Nursing. Tawaii has now completed 19 years of service including some time in Melbourne.
Since 2008 she has worked at Popondetta General Hospital with five of those years being in A & E where she says the pressure never ceases and hundreds of people appear each morning for treatment.
Tawaii is dedicated to the care and welfare of her patients, particularly young children. Her dream is to one-day build a clinic for women and babies as well as helping others suffering from HIV/AIDS.
