Sourcing from local materials

OCDP Newsletter No 10

Our new library extension has been completed using local materials and labour. The timber, sourced from local villages, was made into planks using the sawmill belonging to our Project Officer in Popondetta, Elijah Sarigari. These planks were then brought down along the Kokoda Road, across the Kumusi River and into St James’. Carpenter, Vernon Gaera has been the main driver behind the completion of the project with the assistance of a team of local workers.

He took the planks and shaped them into what is now the school library. The insulated roof makes this a refuge from the scorching sun as well as a haven in which to discover the wonderful world of books.
