Education in PNG

Educating your child begins at a village elementary school. These are operated by local villagers. By Grade 3, a student is ready for primary school where he or she will stay until the end of Grade 8.  Some will continue their education at a high school until Grade 12. The option to apply for a technical/vocational centre is limited as are university places.

The ages of children in each grade can vary considerably. A student may have time off to care for a sick relative or to assist in the family financially by obtaining employment. Most commonly, children in PNG often struggle to complete all grades of primary School.

There are tertiary institutions throughout the major centres.

Despite the abolition of school fees by the National Government, there are still too many children who miss out on a satisfactory level of education.
